Recently, the 500 block of NW 16th Street was shut off from traffic for an entire afternoon. Why? So we could throw ourselves a party! (Many thanks to block captain Austin Hacker). Sure it rained most of the time. And sure there were mosquitoes attacking us between rain showers. But there were so many great things happening that it didn't seem to matter: things like homemade ice cream, tunes blaring from “Club Turnbaugh”, kids playing with sparklers, adults playing with sparklers, burgers & dogs, veggie burgers & dogs...oh, and did I mention the homemade ice cream? Memories were made, neighbors reconnected, and the first annual “500 Block of 16th Street’s Summertime Bash” was born. (We’ll work on a catchier name next year). There’s still time for your block to party—so what are you waiting for?
